What AI can't replace here
In short: If you work with AI every day, you know how good it is. You also know what it's missing.
Opinion. I use AI every day. This isn't a complaint.
AI is remarkably good. If you work with it, you know. It drafts the investor update. It tests your pricing. It summarises studies. And at two in the morning it plays devil's advocate when nobody else will. I use it for some of that myself.
So the honest question is: what's left for a human psychologist?
AI lacks the broader context
AI is brilliant at the next answer. It's weak at the broader context. And I mean that in a specific way.
It doesn't know:
- who you become when the money starts running out.
- that you go quiet for two days when your co-founder says "let's be pragmatic".
- that the last three times you called a decision "obvious", you were talking yourself into something.
- that you told me in March you'd stop doing exactly this.
In theory you could tell it all of that. In practice, hardly anyone does. The most important things about how you work are things you don't know yourself. So you don't write them down.
They aren't in your notes. They show in your tone on certain topics. In the questions where you change the subject. In what you ask about three times. A person who has listened to you for months can pick that up.
Understanding you takes time
This matters most to me. Understanding someone isn't a question of data. It's a question of time.
It takes contact, again and again. In different moods, in good weeks and bad ones. It takes someone trained to spot patterns. And honest enough to name them.
That's what psychological depth means in practice. It isn't that I know more theories. The AI has read more theories than I have. It's that I've seen you over a long time. Then I can say: this is the third time. Here's what the three have in common. What do you want to do about it?
AI doesn't really push back
It gives you counterarguments if you ask. But there's a lot it doesn't do:
- It doesn't sit across from you and say "I don't believe you" when you say you're fine.
- It doesn't notice that you've scheduled and cancelled the same hard conversation twice.
- And it isn't quietly pleased for you when you've done it.
The value is in the relationship. With someone who remembers. Who has no stake in your company. And who is trained to see what's easy to miss from the inside. The conversation is just the form it takes.
So use both
Use AI for the work. To think and write faster, and to check yourself at any hour.
And have one person who looks at you rather than the output. Who knows the broader context. And who tells you when the problem is you.
I'm there to talk, to think with you, and to push back when it's needed. That part doesn't scale. That's exactly why it's worth something.
